Emma Read, daughter of David and Jane Read, was born July 19, 1861, at Salt Creek, near the present location of Lincoln, and passed away at her home in Surprise on Monday, June 21, at the age of 86 years, 11 months and two days. When she was three weeks old the family moved from the log cabin on Salt Creek to another log cabin near Brainard, living there a short time, then moving on this time to a dugout near the present town of Surprise, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to Geo. S. Shrader July 4, 1877. To this union 12 children were born. Her husband and four sons have preceded her in death. Those left to mourn her passing are five daughters, three sons, 23 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. The children are Bessie Reid, Sybil Welch, Mabel Wustrack and Fred K. Shrader of Surprise, Geo. A.
Shrader of Rising City , Edna Starn of Modesto, Calif., David Shrader of Ovid, Colo., and Ruth Smith of Kansas City, Mo. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Allie Pickering of Ulysses, and one brother, Fred Read of Douglas, Wyo. Mrs. Shrader was considered the oldest continuous resident of Butler County and many interesting and thrilling stories have been told by her of the pioneer days, of the hardships and struggles of her parents in keeping the family together. The Indians were the playmates of the children. For many years she and her family lived on their farm 3 1/2 miles southwest of Surprise. They moved to Surprise Aug. 11, 1913 and on Feb. 7, 1935 her husband passed away. She was converted at a revival meeting at the Greenleaf Church five miles northwest of Surprise and later on was baptized in the Baptist Church in Surprise, remaining a faithful member until the church closed, then taking her membership to the M. E. Church. She was a member of Arcadia chapter O. E. S., joining March 8, 1904 and attending regularly until her health began to fail last fall. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Surprise Thursday afternoon, June 24, at 2:30 o'clock with Rev. J. Brox conducting the services. Mrs. Clifford Cordes sang "When I get to the End of the Way" and "In the Garden," accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Albert Sack, at the piano. Pallbearers were Authur Kunzman, John Aden, Roswell Ludden, Lloyd Smith, Lloyd Whitmore and Darwin McKellips. Burial was in the Blue Valley Cemetery, with Eastern Star service by Arcadia chapter.

Van Sickle, Margaret Bond, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Craft, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Shrader and Ray Warner, Lincoln; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert McCray, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McCray and son and Edith McCray, Fullerton; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pickering and Mrs. Allie Pickering of Ulysses and Harold Shrader and sons of David City.
